"Give these patients a better chance of healthy ageing."
MSc Lisanne Koomen, resident psychiatrist, Utrecht University
Did you know that people with a serious mental illness die on average 10 to 25 years earlier than healthy people? Often this is not because of their mental illness, but because of a cardiovascular disease. My research will develop an app to help them lead a healthy life. Lend a helping hand and give them a good chance to grow old!
Psychiatric patients are less likely to age healthily
Physical exercise is vitally important for psychiatric patients. It prevents cardiovascular disease and aids recovery from mental illness. But leading a healthy life is all the more difficult for them due to difficult social contact, for example. That’s why they have a high risk of dying early.
Getting more exercise thanks to new app
My research consists of developing and testing a new physical exercise app. The personal app helps patients make contact and set achievable exercise goals. For six months, 150 patients and their carers will use the app. We will measure whether it works by performing before-and-after tests (fats in the blood, abdominal circumference and how the patient feels). After 6 months, we will conduct a retest to see if the result is permanent.
Healthier exercise saves lives
If this app works, we can distribute it on a large scale and improve the chances of survival of many psychiatric patients by letting them exercise in a healthier way!
